Finding Your Groove Zone
The groove zone is the ultimate zone. Have you ever seen Kobe Bryant in his scoring hoop zone? Or the mad dribble-drive skills of Vince Carter in his dunk zone? Or have you ever heard Lauryn Hill sway an audience into a hypnotic frenzy while in a funky hip-hop zone? Or Outkast or Baja men bustin a brainteaser rhyme zone that dizzies rap fans into mental muscle cramps and spasms? Well, they are no different than you. Just as they have groove, God has given all Christians a "spiritual groove." Spiritual groove is simply a supernatural ability given to us by God that helps us shape our divine purpose and destiny to bless and prosper our lives and the lives of others. The only difference between you and a Kobe Bryant or a Toni Braxton is that they know their "groove" and the zone that activates it. The day Kobe Bryant becomes a math teacher is the day he loses his groove. The day Laruyn hill becomes a computer hardware specialist is the day she steps out of her zone. When you are out of your spiritual zone, you cannot function optimally, emotionally, or spiritually. Just as a fish out of water is somebody's dinner, likewise your life out of its groove zone is simply for someone else's pleasure. So how do I find my groove zone? You ask great questions.
I. "All God's Children Got a Groove"
First of all, it begins by embracing the reality that you already have a "spiritual groove." If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, the Bible teaches that you already have "spiritual groove." The Bible teaches us that every Christian has been given by God at least one spiritual gift. Consequently, all of God's children have the ability to live a Christian life with purpose, meaning and fulfillment while blessing and enriching the lives of others. So say it with me; "I have spiritual groove." (I Pet. 4:10, I Cor. 12:11)
II. "The Groove Cannot Be Perpetrated"
Your "spiritual groove" only works for you. Make no mistake; there will never be another Kobe, Lauryn, or D'Angelo. God loves you so much that he gave you a groove that only works for you. And so stop trying to duplicate somebody else's groove and claim what is uniquely yours in Christ Jesus and through the power of the Holy Ghost. I know of a brother that was a great basketball player in high school. He was probably one of the best basketball players I had ever seen on a high school level. NBA was his destiny. He played high school ball like a man among boys. There was only one problem: He hated basketball. He only played the game because everyone expected him to due to his unusual height. After a long history of crime and jail time, he found his groove. He is now an artist. Imagine that; a 6 ft. 8 in. Micheanglo. Sounds like the Lord to me. Currently, he is developing his skills in art in order to become a professional artist. Recently he was quoted as saying, "now, I know why I was born." And I think my friend's experience has a word for all of us; don't let people determine your groove. God has given you something on the inside that is so unique and supernatural that you are the only one that can bring it into existence. People make a lot of money everyday but are like fish out water, beached with no purpose or fulfillment in life. (I Cor. 12:4)
III. "Never Pimp The Groove"
God wants you to use your "spiritual groove" to encourage and strengthen other Christians. All too often people want us to think that the world revolves around "ME." No. Our world revolves around Jesus Christ. And when he is axis of our existence, he has a way of positioning our lives in the proper place for a groove zone experience. Make no mistake, if Jesus Christ is the author of our groove, then he is the maker of the zone. He is the only one who can make the zone happen. God wants you to use your gifts to encourage and strengthen your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. And by doing so, you demonstrate to the world that God's people are a great family and our heavenly Father is a good father that takes care of his kids. Once you have been drenched in the grace of God, God uses your groove to drip some more grace into the into the drought-stricken lives of your friends, family and yes even your enemies. Your giftedness is God's supernatural secret service way of touching the world, both spiritually and emotionally. (I Cor. 12:4)
IV. "You can figure out your groove"
Take a Groove test. I grew up during a time when I thought the only gift in the church was preaching and singing. But understand my brothers and sisters, God is bigger than any church. God has untold millions of ways for his people to walk in their groove. Now, a good way of helping find that starting point is by taking what is called a "spiritual gifts test." I know it sounds academic but it has everything to do with your anointing or groove. A spiritual gift test is simply a measurement tool that helps you discover how God has designed your "groove." It will help you focus on what you do best. And then once you have taken the test, go hard in your "groove zone."
V. "Finding your Groove Zone requires Faith"
Finding your groove will ultimately be a step of faith. There is a great story in the Bible about a brother named Paul. Paul was a brother that God had given the groove to plant churches. But Paul had no idea how he would do this. He had never planted a church in his life. Initially, he tried planting churches among his Jewish brothers. But for the most part, they were hostile toward him and rejected his message. Finally, Paul decided that he would plant churches among the Gentiles. And as he continued to minister and serve among the Gentiles, God opened numerous church planting opportunities among the Gentiles that he never received among his Jewish brothers. And years later, after planting numerous gentile churches, he discovered that he was "called to be an apostle to the gentiles" (Eph. 2:6-7). In other words, after stepping out on faith, God began to open doors, which confirmed the groove God had placed in him. And it was only over a period of time of walking by faith that he fell into his "groove zone." Likewise, you are going have to step out on faith. If God moves your heart to encourage juveniles through song, then this may be the beginning of your "groove journey." If God stimulates your mind to provide Internet skills for others, then do it. Take the step of faith because God has so many opportunities for you to find your groove zone.
